We were honored that Travel & Leisure recently noted that Downtown Napa’s transformation ‘probably started with the opening of the Oxbow Public Market’ and that today, the market is ‘still going strong’ in one of the more definitive guides to Napa Valley that we’ve read in recent years.

A lot began with the Oxbow Public Market. From the very beginnings in late 2007, the Oxbow Public Market established direct links with locally-owned and operated businesses – connecting Napa residents to local farms, ranches, and sustainable food producers. We took it a step further and became a flagship composting business for Napa Recycling. What began as a test program with Napa Recycling at the Oxbow Public Market now includes more than 300 commercial businesses who send over 400 tons per month to the composting facility instead of the landfill.

Here’s a snapshot of Oxbow Public Market’s commitment to protecting our environment and preserving resources.

🌱 Lead by Example: Oxbow was the original flagship composting commercial site in Napa. This began as a test program and continues to be the gold standard for the area.

🌱 Protect Waterways: The front planter is a bioswale, and is engineered to collect all the rain water from the gutters at the market and filter out pollutants before the water goes into the storm drain.

🌱 Compost: All of the Oxbow Public Market merchants are required to use either standard washable tableware or compostable single use tableware, including straws, plates, napkins, and packaging. Several multi-purpose stations available throughout the market allowing customers to actively participate in the disposal of compost, trash, and recycling.

🌱 Reuse When Possible: The furniture in the north common area is repurposed from a high school gym.

🌱 Do No Harm: All cleaning supplies are environmentally friendly, and hand dryers have replaced paper towels with in the bathrooms, reducing waste and protecting cleaning staff.
