Sumo Dog explores the combinations of the American classic with a heavy nod to the Japanese Izakaya.
This February, the Oxbow Public Market is happy to welcome Sumo Dog to the market as part of our Chef-in-Residence program. Get ready to enjoy the American Classic hot dog and redefined with Japanese ingredients, inspiration and tradition. Sumo Dog is the brainchild of Jeffrey Lunak, a veteran of “Iron Chef” Morimoto’s Restaurant Group and the opening executive chef of the highly-regarded Morimoto Napa.
Sumo Dog’s menu includes plain, New York, and Chicago Dogs, as well as:
- the restaurant’s signature Sumo Dog (Wasabi Relish, Pickled Peppers, Spicy Mayo, Teriyaki Sauce, Furikake, Minced Onion, and Nori)
- the popular Miso Katsu Dog (Breaded and Fried Dog, Miso Mustard Cole Slaw, Tonkatsu Sauce, Mayo, and Furikake, Scallions)
- the Instagram-worthy Godzilla (Footlong All Beef Hot Dog, Beef Chili, Togarashi Cheese Sauce, Wasabi Relish, Pickled Peppers, Spicy Mayo, Teriyaki Sauce, Furikake, Minced Onion, and Jalapeno, Nori)
… among others.
Beyond hot dogs, Sumo Dog’s menu also includes handheld sandwiches and all-day breakfast snacks, such as breakfast burritos and a signature Sumo Chopped Cheese (Ground Beef, onions, peppers, American Cheese, Shredded Lettuce, Tomato, Spicy Mayo, Furikake on a Potato Roll). Don’t overlook the sides (French fries, tater tots, or sushi rice tots) served either plain, with chili & cheese, or Sumo Style.
Starting February 1, Sumo Dog will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Hot Dogs, Japanese Cuisine & Napa Valley
“Opening Sumo Dog in Napa’s Oxbow Public Market is like coming home,” said Sumo Dog founder Jeffrey Lunak. “I have an enduring connection to the Napa Valley, and we look forward to sharing the world of Sumo Dog with Napa locals and the many visitors to this world class destination.”
Sumo Dog joins the Oxbow Public Market as part of the market’s Chef-In-Residence program. More than a pop-up shop, the residency spans multiple months and takes the concept to a much more collaborative level. A winning strategy for all involved, the program allows the market to bring together the very best new and trending talent, introducing guests to popular up-and-coming brands and allows each new participating restaurateur to test the waters in the Napa Valley market.
“The Oxbow Public Market strives to curate a diverse mix of tenants that not only represent the best in local food, artisan goods, and unique experiences, but also reflect the values of the Napa community,” said Gabe Carlin, Oxbow Public Market property manager. “Sumo Dog brings a new take on an American classic and executes it with the best quality ingredients at an attractive price point. We believe it will be a massive hit with market guests.”
